Omar Arroyo, the former Mayor of Haines City, Florida, has dedicated his life to serving his community and advocating for its growth. Born in 1983, Omar immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1999, settling in Austin, Texas, before moving to Haines City in 2001. At just 16, he began a career in residential framing and has since become a Certified Builder Contractor in Florida.

Omar’s political journey is marked by significant milestones. In 2022, he made history as the first Hispanic Commissioner in Haines City. The following year, he became the first Vice Mayor and, in 2024, he was elected as the first Hispanic Mayor of Haines City, as well as the first Mexican Mayor in Florida.

Beyond his political achievements, Omar is actively involved in his community. He serves as the chairman of the HCA Board of Poinciana Hospital and is an active board member of the United Way. He also participates in the Florida League of Mayors, Florida League of Cities, the Florida Black Caucus, and volunteers with various nonprofits around Polk County, including Unity in the Community, Hispanic Empowerment Foundation and The Freedom Tour.

Omar is passionate about supporting youth in sports and the arts, believing in the importance of fostering talent and creativity. He enjoys spending quality time with his wife of 19 years and their three children, often vacationing together to explore caves and hiking trails. A true fan of his heritage, Omar has a particular love for tacos, which he proudly embraces as part of his culture.

“Mexicano Distinguido” recognition

City Commissioner Omar Arroyo, the city’s first Hispanic elected official and first Mexican Mayor in Florida, was recognized at a Haines City Commission meeting with the prestigious “Mexicano Distinguido” recognition; one of the highest honors granted by the Government of Mexico through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME).

The award was formally presented by Mr. Juan Sabines, Consul of Mexico in Orlando and former Governor of the State of Chiapas.

Commissioner Arroyo was selected as the sole honoree for 2025 among Mexican nationals and descendants living abroad. The “Mexicano Distinguido” recognition is presented annually to only one individual across the globe who has resided outside of Mexico for at least five consecutive years and has demonstrated an exceptional professional or personal trajectory. This award honors excellence in fields such as business, science, technology, education, the arts, or social responsibility.

Commissioner Arroyo’s lifelong commitment to public service and leadership in the City of Haines City has exemplified the values recognized by this distinction. His work continues to bring pride to his heritage and plays a vital role in strengthening the cultural and civic ties between the United States and Mexico.
